Science
At John Tonkin College, Science is about discovery through real-world experiences. Our unique facilities, including our on-site aquaculture centre, give students the opportunity to develop hands-on skills in fish breeding, aquaculture management, and sustainability. From raising Black Bream for release into the Peel Estuary to growing mussels in our aquaculture system, students gain practical skills while contributing to environmental projects.
Marine Studies is a highlight of our programme, connecting students directly to the incredible environment on our doorstep. Camps and fieldwork experiences—such as swimming alongside Whale Sharks, monitoring seagrass meadows, and exploring coastal and marine ecosystems—help students develop scientific understanding and a lifelong connection to the ocean. These unforgettable opportunities bring science to life while building teamwork, leadership, and resilience.
Sustainability underpins all that we do. Programmes like Surf Science and Bush Rangers allow students to engage in conservation, revegetation, and coastal science, while our “Kids Teaching Kids” initiative empowers them to share knowledge and inspire younger learners.
Strong partnerships with local stakeholders—including Murdoch University, the Peel Harvey Catchment Council, and environmental organisations—extend learning beyond the classroom and provide authentic, meaningful projects.
Science at JTC is more than a subject. It’s an opportunity for students to gain practical skills, experience science in action, and become leaders in caring for their community and environment.
“At John Tonkin College, Science goes beyond the classroom, giving students the chance to work with industry partners, protect local ecosystems, and learn through hands-on discovery.”
