English

English

The John Tonkin College English Learning Area has a strong commitment to deliver excellent teaching tailored to student needs, readiness and achievements. We aspire for excellence and continually challenge ourselves to achieve success. Our priorities in English include: success for all students, high quality teaching and effective leadership.

Our vision is that all students in English and Media will have the opportunity to develop literacy skills that will enable them to be lifelong learners who are functionally and critically literate. Our programs are designed to develop literacy, support students’ learning in other learning areas, provide them with excellent communication and language skills necessary for active participation in life, the workplace and further studies.

In our English courses, students study, analyse and discuss a wide range of texts including fiction, non-fiction and visual texts. Our lessons are carefully planned using a wide range of Writing, Inquiry, Communication, Organisation and Reading strategies to enhance all students’ functional and critical literacy.

I truly respect and value the professional culture of the English staff at John Tonkin College. They are committed to learning and education. They carefully consider the academic and learning needs of every student, conscientiously and effectively implement excellent teaching practice and tailor each lesson to the individual needs of students.

Danielle Bray, English Teacher

English is well-structured and organised. Our lessons are delivered in a meaningful and purposeful way. There is a good balance of reading and writing, and we study a diverse range of texts- both contemporary and classic.
